Sara Al Obaidly is a photographer and film director. Born in Qatar, she studied in the UK at the University of Brighton. Her portraits were selected for exhibition in the 2014 and 2016 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize.
Sara's portraits of Qatari Nationals adopt a minimal, modernist approach, at the same time as honouring the conventional, more formal restraints of Arab portraiture, with which she grew up.
Commissioned by Qatar Museums, the series attempts to navigate an artistic path between Qatar's traditional roots as a Muslim country and its irrepressible progress as part of the modern world.
